Accessibility-First XR

Three Builds on Rokid AR Glasses

A talk about three on-device accessibility builds: live captioning, ambient sound awareness, and a cross-cultural translation rig for domestic-violence case work. Each one closes with a designer's checklist, an engineer's reference architecture, and the methodology that ties them together.

Abstract

The talk walks each build and shows how the need was identified before the code was written. The through-line is research first, listen to people with lived experience first, then build. Captioning and alarm classification came out of researching the most-requested accessibility tools in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The translation rig came from a nonprofit that brought the problem before anyone on the engineering side had thought to solve it.

Handouts

These materials were prepared for the June 6 talk and are shared here for attendees and anyone interested in the work.
